Tesla is prepping a Cybercab onslaught

According to TechCrunch, Tesla is preparing to expand its Cybercab robotaxi service beyond Austin, starting in Dallas next month and reaching other cities by the end of the year. It already operates robotaxi Model Ys in Dallas, Houston, Miami, Orlando, and Tampa and plans to sell Cybercabs to fleet operators by year-end. Chief Financial Officer Vaibhav Taneja stated the goal is to "literally take over every part of terrestrial transportation."

Tesla argues its Cybercab is cheaper and easier to manufacture, which could undercut market leader Waymo. CEO Elon Musk said the ride-hailing business will not materially affect financial results until the second quarter of 2027. The company also changed its disclosed metric from paid to unsupervised robotaxi miles, and a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigation is examining Cybercab compliance with federal safety standards. Vice President Ashok Elluswamy said bottlenecks are technology-driven, not purely regulatory, and the company plans to address more challenging driving scenarios before scaling further.
