Ukraine learns to fight without Starlink as Musk plays politics with satellites

Starlink has been crucial for Ukraine's communications and drone operations, but service disruptions linked to Elon Musk's political decisions are forcing Ukraine to develop alternatives. The US and European nations have funded tens of thousands of Starlink terminals and subscriptions, including military-grade Starshield access, according to Ars Technica.

Restrictions began in February 2023 when SpaceX blocked military drone use, and resumed on October 13, 2026 with speed-based throttling that disrupted drone missions and air defenses during major Russian attacks. The throttling was reportedly imposed at Musk's order and potentially in consultation with President Donald Trump, though both denied responsibility.

Ukrainian defense companies like BlueBird Tech are reducing reliance on Starlink by using fiber-optic cables, ground-based wireless networks, laser communications, and radio mesh networks, though some applications still lack direct replacements. The company integrates Starlink in only a small percentage of its products and has long avoided critical dependence on the service.
