Forced to pick, Grok’s AI model chooses Republicans. OpenAI’s picks Democrats.
According to TechCrunch, a study found that when forced to pick candidates in upcoming midterm elections, Grok recommended Republicans in 92% of answers while GPT picked Democrats in 97%, with the models agreeing less than 10% of the time across nearly 500 races. The researchers asked the models via APIs to name one candidate without hedging; consumer apps refused. Grok cited conservative sources and focused on immigration, taxes, crime, and energy; GPT relied on Wikipedia, the Associated Press, Axios, and Reddit and searched more for healthcare and abortion.
When internet search was turned off, Grok's Republican lean disappeared while GPT's Democratic lean persisted, suggesting GPT's bias is in its weights and Grok's stems from search patterns. The findings come weeks before the November 3 midterms and could fuel debate over political bias in AI. The article notes Musk's donations to GOP candidates and previous Grok models consulting Musk, while OpenAI's CEO has donated to Democrats but recently supported more Republicans.
