Tesla turns to car rental platform Turo for Full Self-Driving test drives
According to Electrek, Turo will let U.S. renters search for Teslas with Full Self‑Driving (Supervised) turned on through a direct integration with Tesla that verifies each car’s FSD status, launching October 28. Hosts link their Tesla account, the platform pulls the status via Tesla’s API, and eligible listings show FSD active for guests to filter. Turo says thousands of FSD‑enabled Teslas are already listed. Hosts receive a free one‑month trial, then pay the regular $99 monthly subscription. Tesla reported 1.74 million active FSD subscriptions in the third quarter, tied to a 10‑million‑subscription milestone for the CEO’s performance award.
The release uses “self‑driving” language, but FSD (Supervised) remains a level‑2 driver‑assistance system with the driver responsible at all times. Turo’s only safeguard is urging guests to review Tesla’s documentation, and it has not clarified liability if a crash occurs while FSD is engaged. A recent incident where a driver fell asleep with FSD active highlights the risk of over‑trust.
