Tesla makes another joke of its Robotaxi geofence expansion
According to Electrek, Tesla expanded its Robotaxi service area in Houston into a rocket-shaped geofence covering roughly 254 square miles, about ten times the original zone, while the fleet grew from 22 to 34 driverless Model Ys over three months.
The expansion follows a pattern seen earlier in Austin, where Tesla widened the service area to the entire metro with only about 20 vehicles before the fleet later increased to 397, more than half of them Cybercabs. In Houston, no Cybercabs are deployed yet, leaving roughly one vehicle per 7.5 square miles.
During the latest earnings call, Tesla identified safety as the main bottleneck for Robotaxi growth, noting it still restricts operations to lower-speed roads and avoids complex environments such as train crossings. The company added that geofenced areas only tell part of the story because service is also limited by the number of vehicles running and the routes they take.
