Musk and Zuckerberg echo Trump's push to rebrand AI as 'super intelligence' on earnings calls. Others do not
According to CNBC, President Trump ordered the term "super intelligence" to replace "artificial intelligence" in executive branch documents, and his tech allies Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg adopted the language on recent earnings calls while other major tech CEOs continued using "AI". Musk renamed SpaceX's AI division to SpaceXSI and on Tesla's call referred to "SI" when discussing humanoid robots. Zuckerberg emphasized Meta's goal of delivering "personal superintelligence" and noted the company already operated a Superintelligence Labs unit.
In contrast, Amazon's Andy Jassy used "AI" repeatedly, Microsoft's Satya Nadella highlighted designing AI to empower people, and Alphabet's Sundar Pichai cited AI investments driving growth. Microsoft's annual report included multiple mentions of "super intelligence", IBM's Arvind Krishna used both terms, and Intel's Lip-Bu Tan pointed to demand for "super intelligence". Palo Alto Networks' Nikesh Arora and Nvidia's Jensen Huang publicly endorsed the new terminology. The shift comes ahead of midterm elections as Trump's approval ratings decline, though continued use of "AI" by some executives does not necessarily signal open defiance.
