Tesla drops car referral rewards, now pays owners in FSD for referrals

Tesla has replaced its vehicle-based referral program with one that rewards owners in Full Self-Driving subscriptions instead of car discounts. According to Electrek, a referred owner receives one free month of FSD Supervised, while the referrer gets a free month or a $99 credit if the friend converts to a paid subscription. The program requires the referrer to already pay for FSD monthly or own it outright from before Tesla stopped selling it outright on February 14. Recent buyers with free trials are locked out for 12 months. Credits expire after 12 months and are capped at 12 rewards per year.

The Refer and Earn page, updated February 24, 2026, now lists only solar panels for buyer benefits and adds demo drives for referrers, while Model S and Model X are no longer mentioned. Tesla reported 1.74 million active FSD subscriptions in its Q3 shareholder letter, a figure tied to a milestone in the CEO performance award. The previous program offered $1,000 buyer discounts and $500 referrer credits.
