Tesla owners who tap Emergency Drive Away for fun are in for a surprise
According to Teslarati, Tesla owners who press Activate on the Emergency Drive Away feature face a $539 service charge even if the vehicle never moves. Launched October 1 with update 2026.38.3, the feature lets drivers pull away from a Supercharger with the cable attached by shifting into Drive, holding the brake, and tapping Activate. A reported case showed pressing the button triggers an alert only Tesla Service can clear, while the car continues charging.
Tesla Charging states actual activation requires a mandatory charge-port inspection and Supercharger repairs up to $25,000, plus penalties for misuse. The service requirement triggers when Activate is pressed, not when the cable separates, because the system cannot confirm the latch was unstressed. The first known real-world use in Austin during an F1 weekend saw a driver drag a cable. Owners should treat the red prompt as a stop sign and unplug normally if activated by mistake.
