Spotify is coming to United Airlines seatbacks — with help from Starlink

United Airlines has launched a native Spotify app on seatback displays that lets passengers stream their personal libraries and playlists during flights, according to The Verge. The integration is powered by Starlink's satellite Wi-Fi network, which is being installed across United's entire fleet and provides low-latency connectivity through more than 11,000 satellites in low Earth orbit.

United executives said the streaming capability would not be possible without Starlink's bandwidth, global coverage — including polar routes — and reliability, which eliminates the complex engineering previously required to manage dropped signals. The airline chose Starlink after independent tests confirmed its performance advantages over geostationary satellite systems.

The Spotify partnership will serve as a blueprint for future third-party streaming app integrations, with United planning to add more platforms. While other carriers including American, Qatar, Emirates, Lufthansa, Air France, and British Airways are also adopting Starlink, United views its mobile app and seatback experience as longer-term differentiators once fast Wi-Fi becomes standard across the industry.
