Tesla reveals Optimus Academy, where robots teach themselves

According to Teslarati, Tesla has begun manufacturing production-quality Optimus robots in Fremont, the first units meeting commercial standards. The line, converted from Model S and X production in 46 days, is sized for one million units annually, with most equipment already installed and output expected to ramp toward 20,000 robots per week following an S-curve trajectory. The team aims to finalize AI, electromechanical design, reliability, and service life by the end of next year, then start deliveries for dangerous, repetitive, around-the-clock jobs.

Without a fleet, Tesla will use an Optimus Academy where 10,000 to 20,000 robots practice tasks and feed data into the next model, with every Fremont unit contributing. An AI5 chip is planned for next year, and a video demonstrating AI-driven tasks should appear within one or two months. Tuopu, Joyson, and Sanhua are certified as mass-production component partners. A larger factory at Giga Texas targets 10 million robots yearly, production costs are trending toward the expected Cybercab cost, and the hands remain the toughest design challenge.
