Tesla’s $10B solar factory could get 35 years of tax breaks in Texas

According to Electrek, Tesla’s proposed $10 billion “Project Crystal Sun” solar factory in Texas could receive up to 35 years of local tax breaks after Fort Bend County commissioners voted 4‑0 to approve four incentive agreements on Thursday.

The agreements include a Chapter 312 abatement eliminating county taxes on $8.6 billion of equipment for ten years starting in 2029, a Chapter 381 rebate returning 90 % of those taxes for twenty years, a foreign‑trade‑zone exemption for inventory with zero PILOT during the abatement, and a true‑up clause guaranteeing the county at least $2 million annually. Tesla must begin construction by June 30 2027, start commercial cell production by December 31 2030, invest $10 billion by the later of December 31 2031 or two years after production, and hire 9,712 workers with a 90 % headcount floor to keep the full abatement. If the plant averages 12,000 employees for two consecutive years in the first decade, the rebate period extends to 25 years, making total incentives last 35 years.
