Musk's SpaceX is still restricting Starlink in Ukraine and the toll is rising

SpaceX's Starlink and Starshield services remain restricted in Ukraine despite claims from President Trump that service was restored, according to CNBC. Ukrainian officials including President Zelenskyy and Deputy Ambassador Denys Sienik confirmed Friday that speed limits imposed since October 14 continue to disrupt military drone operations.

The restrictions cut connectivity for drones traveling above 100 mph, limiting strike capabilities against Russian logistics, said national security expert Dmitri Alperovitch. Zelenskyy's defense tech advisor Serhii Beskrestnov noted any apparent improvements likely stem from SpaceX's algorithms rather than policy changes. Democratic lawmakers have called for an investigation, and bipartisan legislators urged Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to expand Starshield arrangements.

Amid the disruptions, Ukraine is pursuing alternative satellite communications. Zelenskyy met with Norwegian officials and Kongsberg to discuss new capabilities, and the Defense Ministry signed a letter of intent with Nokia and ICEYE to explore sovereign satellite communications. Musk and SpaceX did not respond to requests for comment.
