Tesla’s Cybercab battery design could make robotaxis even cheaper

According to Teslarati, Tesla designed the Cybercab battery pack with extra space to allow a future switch to lithium iron phosphate cells, which are cheaper, run cooler, and last longer than the current nickel-based 4680 cells. The reserved room lets Tesla add more LFP cells to offset their lower energy density, and part of the space exists because fewer batteries were needed than originally estimated. The pack uses four individually sealed modules instead of a structural design, making it easier to replace a faulty module; a Tesla executive called the older structural approach difficult to repair. The company targets a pack under 50 kWh with close to 300 miles of range and plans to deliver the first customer Cybercabs by the end of 2026, though most will stay in Tesla’s own robotaxi fleet.

Separately, United Airlines says Starlink provides a temporary competitive advantage, with the system on 43 percent of its fleet and plans for full coverage by the end of 2027. The airline aims to convert trial users into loyal customers while widening its technology lead over rivals.
