Tesla Powerwall 3 now boosts heat pumps to store cheap solar as heat
According to Electrek, Tesla has launched Heat Pump Optimization for Powerwall 3 and Powerwall 3P in Europe, enabling the battery to signal compatible heat pumps to store cheap or surplus solar energy as heat. The feature uses the SG-Ready standard, sending "normal" or "boost" signals based on electricity prices and solar production. When boosted, the heat pump heats water beyond immediate demand into a tank, storing thermal energy for use during expensive hours. Signals are recommendations that the heat pump's thermostat can override, must be held at least 10 minutes, and the feature disables during outages. There is no on/off toggle in the Tesla app.
According to Electrek, a 300-liter tank heated an extra 30°C holds about 10.5 kWh of thermal energy, requiring roughly 3.5 kWh of electricity at a coefficient of performance of 3, leaving the Powerwall's 13.5 kWh capacity free for other loads. Germany sold 299,000 heating heat pumps in 2025, up 55% year-over-year, making up nearly half of new heating systems. Tesla is late to this market; sonnen and German PV energy managers already offer similar SG-Ready control. The feature remains Europe-only with no announced plans for the US or Canada, where the hardware standard is rare.
