Grok Bot users hit with weekly limits early, Elon Musk explains what happened

According to Teslarati, Elon Musk acknowledged on X that the cost of serving Grok Bot has become unsustainably high relative to revenue, prompting SpaceX to scale back weekly usage limits for subscribers. The admission followed user complaints about hitting limits unexpectedly, sometimes overnight, despite Musk having described the product weeks earlier as the fastest-growing he had ever seen.

During a third-quarter earnings call, Musk said paid weekly users reached 800,000 and daily active users climbed from under 100,000 to over 600,000, with usage per user rising. Grok Bot, launched in August, runs as an always-on agent with persistent cloud compute bundled into X subscription tiers without a free tier. Its agentic architecture consumes far more compute than standard chatbots, and the same GPUs could be rented to other labs at higher rates. Musk did not promise an immediate reset or higher allowances, simply stating the constraint, which underscores a broader industry challenge: rapid paid growth can outpace subscription pricing before companies adjust limits or introduce metered billing.
