Tesla says customers can add their own vehicles to the robotaxi fleet next year — will it happen?
Tesla said during its third-quarter earnings call that owners will be able to add their vehicles to the robotaxi fleet in the second quarter of 2027, according to The Verge. Vice President for Autonomous Driving Ashok Elluswamy stated the software for Cybercabs and Model Y is the same and a V15 release will enable customer vehicles to join geofences and fleet management for full autonomy.
The company has a history of missing autonomous driving deadlines. In 2019, the chief executive promised a million robotaxis by 2020 and a network where owners earn passive income, but neither materialized. Tesla currently operates a few hundred robotaxis in Texas and Florida, some with safety monitors, and several dozen driverless Cybercabs in Austin. Full Self-Driving adoption rose sharply, with over 75 percent of new North American buyers selecting the feature this quarter, though vehicle sales declined.
Regulatory permits, insurance difficulties, and legal restrictions on private self-driving taxis remain significant obstacles. Older Model 3 and Y vehicles lack the latest hardware, while dedicated Cybercabs are built for driverless service. The company reported 3.3 million autonomous miles driven, up from 380,000 in July.
