Tesla FSD ‘subscriptions’ hit 1.74M, counted the way Musk’s pay package wants

According to Electrek, Tesla reports 1.74 million active Full Self-Driving subscriptions, up 67% from a year ago, but the metric follows the definition written for Elon Musk's 2025 CEO Performance Award and includes owners who paid upfront years ago. The 10 million subscription milestone is one of several operational targets Musk must hit to earn his compensation package, which runs until 2035.

Tesla stopped selling FSD as a one-time purchase in February 2026, switching to a $99 monthly subscription, yet previous buyers at prices up to $15,000 remain counted as long as their vehicles are active. The company does not disclose how many of the 1.74 million actually pay monthly, nor does it define the claimed 75% attach rate on new North American deliveries.

At the current quarterly pace of 260,000 net additions, reaching 10 million would take about eight years; at the annual pace of roughly 700,000, closer to twelve. As of June 30, only the 20 million vehicle delivery milestone was considered probable. Many counted "subscribers" were promised unsupervised self-driving that has not been delivered.
