Tesla says it will start selling Cybercabs by end of year
Tesla said Wednesday it will begin selling its Cybercab to customers by the end of the year, even as federal regulators investigate whether the vehicle meets safety standards. The autonomous two-seater lacks a steering wheel and traditional controls. According to TechCrunch, Tesla's vice president of engineering Lars Moravy said current production is destined for the company's own robotaxi fleet, with customer deliveries starting small and scaling as the company learns about fleet management.
CEO Elon Musk said the Cybercab is designed for ride-hailing as a transport service, not personal ownership, and that most will be Tesla-owned. He also said an unsupervised version of Full Self-Driving would roll out to customers in the second quarter of next year, another delay for owners. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an investigation last month into Tesla's certification of the Cybercab, which lacks manual controls required by current standards, though the Department of Transportation has proposed removing those requirements for autonomous vehicles.
