Tesla starts Optimus robot production in California as profit falls 43%

Tesla has started production of its Optimus humanoid robot at its Fremont factory, producing the first production-quality units. Chief Executive Elon Musk called it early production with a slow, bumpy ramp and a target of 20,000 units per week by the end of 2027, though design tweaks for safety and durability and further AI work for open-ended tasks remain.

The robot push contributed to a 43 percent drop in third-quarter net income to $787 million as expenses surged on AI, autonomous driving, and Optimus. Revenue was flat at $28.04 billion, with electric vehicle sales unchanged year over year at $20 billion. Deliveries rose slightly from the prior quarter but fell short of the same period a year earlier. Solar and energy storage revenue declined 16 percent to $2.8 billion, while services revenue grew 33 percent to $4.6 billion. Executives remained bullish on Full Self-Driving, but the unsupervised version was delayed again; the vice president of AI software estimated some customer vehicles could join a robotaxi fleet around the second quarter next year, after Musk had earlier pointed to the fourth quarter this year.
