Tesla pushes unsupervised FSD to Q2 2027, and only inside Robotaxi zones
According to Electrek, Tesla now says unsupervised Full Self-Driving in customer-owned cars will arrive in the second quarter of 2027, but only as part of its managed Robotaxi fleet. On the third-quarter 2026 earnings call, AI chief Ashok Elluswamy said owners would add their vehicles to Tesla's network, meaning cars would drive unsupervised only where the Robotaxi service already operates. The service currently runs in six U.S. metros with small geofenced areas, mostly low-speed routes avoiding highways. In the Bay Area, unsupervised operation is not permitted because Tesla has not sought the required California DMV deployment permit. By the end of the third quarter, the fleet had logged nearly two million unsupervised miles, though third-party data showed only dozens of fully driverless Teslas on the road.
The new target narrows earlier promises of a car that could drive anywhere via software update. Previous timelines from Elon Musk predicted unsupervised personal use by late 2025, and hardware-three owners have been told their computers cannot support the feature. Elluswamy cited safety as the bottleneck and guessed issues might be resolved by next year, but acknowledged uncertainty.
