Just because Tesla’s Optimus is in production doesn’t mean it’s actually ready
According to The Verge, Tesla has begun early production of its Optimus humanoid robot on a high‑volume line in Fremont, but the robot still lacks ready artificial intelligence, perfected hands, safety, reliability and durability. Elon Musk said the pieces may come together by the end of 2027 for deliveries to outside companies, without naming customers or tasks.
Musk described a production S‑curve, saying reaching 20,000 robots a week will take at least a year. He said Tesla must build 10,000 to 20,000 robots to generate training data at an Optimus Academy and plans to integrate an AI5 chip in April 2027. Robotics professor Ken Goldberg told The Verge that hardware without software is a problem, dexterity remains harder than locomotion, and current task success rates of 70 to 80 percent are not acceptable for industry. Musk promised a video within a month or two showing Optimus performing non‑preprogrammed tasks.
