Waymo adds nearly 250 square miles of robotaxi coverage in 5 cities

Waymo is expanding its driverless service area by nearly 250 square miles across Los Angeles, Nashville, Orlando, San Diego, and the San Francisco Bay Area, according to Electrek. The company announced the growth in a blog post, with updated maps already available in its app. In Los Angeles, coverage extends down the coast through Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach to Torrance, while San Diego's zone now reaches La Jolla, University City, and Clairemont. The Bay Area service now runs from San Francisco down the Peninsula to San Jose and Campbell, including a BART connection at Berryessa station.

Waymo did not disclose square mileage by city or the number of vehicles being added. The expansion comes after the company surpassed 1,400 square miles across 11 cities in May and now operates in 15 U.S. metros with more than 500,000 paid rides per week. Electrek notes that Tesla's Houston robotaxi geofence reached about 254 square miles this week with 34 vehicles, while Waymo logged 3.9 million rider-only miles per week in Q2 2026 compared to Tesla's 558,000 driverless miles. Waymo is also mapping Toronto for a 2028 launch.
