Tesla confirms Vietnam entry to take on VinFast and its 36% market share
According to Electrek, Tesla has confirmed its entry into Vietnam through a recruiter's announcement and five job openings including a charging project developer, indicating plans to build Superchargers. The company registered Tesla Motors Vietnam LLC in Ho Chi Minh City on September 11 with about 77.7 billion dong in charter capital.
VinFast holds roughly 36 percent of the new car market, delivering 177,697 vehicles through September out of about 495,000 total. Its VF 3 model, priced under $13,000, is the best-selling vehicle, and VinFast models took the top five spots in September. Tesla would likely import from Giga Shanghai, though Vietnam keeps high tariffs on passenger cars under the ASEAN-China free trade agreement.
Vietnam extended its registration fee exemption for battery-electric cars through 2030, covering imported EVs. VinFast's sister company V-Green runs the dominant charging network and plans to spend about $380 million on 99 ultra-fast stations. Tesla has used similar hiring patterns before launching in Thailand and the Philippines.
