Tesla Semi catches fire in California: what we know
A Tesla Semi caught fire on Interstate 880 in Hayward, California, prompting a hours-long closure of both traffic directions before lanes reopened early Wednesday. The fire started just after 5:30 a.m. local time on Tuesday in the southbound lanes, and the California Highway Patrol shut down both directions due to potential hazardous chemical smoke risks. No injuries were reported.
According to Teslarati, the cause remains unknown as neither Tesla nor the CHP have determined it. Images from before the truck was destroyed suggest the unit may be from Tesla's pilot program rather than the refreshed version that entered mass production a month ago. The CHP described the lithium batteries as "incredibly difficult to extinguish," per NBC Bay Area. The driver reported the fire but offered no explanation. An estimated 5,000 to 7,000 semi-truck and large commercial vehicle fires occur on U.S. roadways annually. The CHP had not responded to requests for additional details at publication time.
