Tesla’s Roadster appearance at SpaceX has merger watchers talking

Tesla's next-generation Roadster appeared at SpaceX's Hawthorne headquarters two weeks after its Texas unveiling, parked beside the Falcon 9 booster that achieved the company's first orbital-class landing in 2015, according to Teslarati. The vehicle uses SpaceX cold gas thrusters and composite overwrapped pressure vessels identical to those on Falcon 9, with Musk describing it as a joint effort by Tesla and SpaceX engineers. Performance targets include 0 to 60 mph in under 0.9 seconds for the Thrust version and under 0.59 seconds for the Rocket version.

The visit coincides with special committees at both companies evaluating a potential merger, a step Musk confirmed during SpaceX's third-quarter earnings call. The Roadster, built on SpaceX hardware, is cited as one of the clearest examples of the two companies already developing products together. Production is slated to begin in 2028, with reservations requiring a $50,000 payment; the Thrust variant is a limited release, the Rocket variant invite-only, and Tesla states the car is not approved for public road use.
