Merging SpaceX and Tesla would be a "good idea," Musk says
Elon Musk said during a SpaceX earnings call that merging SpaceX and Tesla would be a good idea, though shareholders must ultimately decide. Both companies formed special committees of independent directors to discuss terms, but no agreement has been reached. Musk cited synergies in artificial intelligence, chip design, robotics, and connectivity via the Starmind constellation as both firms shift toward AI-focused operations.
SpaceX filings show Musk holds over 82 percent voting power there versus about 20 percent at Tesla. A merger could give him majority voting control of the combined company, depending on valuations. At announcement, SpaceX and Tesla were valued at roughly $2 trillion and $1.5 trillion. Any deal requires approval from 50 percent of all Tesla shareholders and faces regulatory review. The committees must first agree on terms before a vote.
