Tesla and SpaceX are discussing a possible merger, Musk says

According to The Verge, Tesla and SpaceX have formed special committees of independent directors to discuss a possible merger at the request of shareholders. Elon Musk, who leads both companies, said he is not involved due to his conflict of interest. The committees have not agreed on terms, and any deal would require shareholder approval, with Tesla needing a 50 percent vote of all shares outstanding.

Musk called a merger a good idea, citing benefits from combining superintelligence software, chip design, robotics, and the Starlink constellation. A combined entity could exceed $3.6 trillion in value. Analysts generally expect SpaceX would acquire Tesla given its higher valuation, giving SpaceX shareholders majority control. Tesla shareholders previously approved Musk's pay package despite a court ruling. Barclays suggested a combination could be announced before Tesla's annual meeting on December 3, 2026.
