Neocloud stocks fall as Elon Musk says more than 200 of them face 'guppy-level death'

Neocloud stocks including Nebius, CoreWeave and Iren fell in premarket trading after Elon Musk posted on X that more than 200 companies in the sector face "guppy-level death and consolidation" because debt markets have largely cut off funding for firms without substantial revenue independent of AI data centers. Musk, who leads SpaceX and Tesla, noted that SpaceX operates its own data centers and competes directly with neoclouds for compute rental business.

The sell-off follows a month of declines, with CoreWeave and Nebius down over 30% and Iren down 40%, triggered by widening credit default swap spreads and rising bond yields for CoreWeave. Investors are concerned about heavy borrowing to buy Nvidia chips and build data centers. Chamath Palihapitiya predicted 2027 will bring stranded compute inventory and consolidation.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said demand for neoclouds is "off the charts" but capital scarcity is the bottleneck, while Nebius executives said their debt profile differs from CoreWeave's and customer demand remains strong for 2027 and 2028 capacity.
