SpaceX closes $40 billion debt deal for AI chips, Elon Musk says
SpaceX has closed $40 billion in debt financing to purchase graphics processing units for artificial intelligence systems, according to a post by Elon Musk on X. The company is investment grade and generates revenue from its Starlink satellite internet and rocket launch businesses.
The financing, primarily callable debt for the chips, is expected to arrive in the first and second quarters of 2027. Bloomberg reported earlier that the proposed structure would use a special purpose vehicle to keep the debt off SpaceX's balance sheet and preserve its investment-grade credit ratings, with Goldman Sachs leading talks with investors including Apollo Global Management.
SpaceX has expanded aggressively into artificial intelligence this year under a segment called Super Intelligence, which has become its largest business unit. Third-quarter revenue for the segment surged ninefold to $7.56 billion from $813 million a year earlier. Musk also said debt markets have largely shut off access to financing for companies without substantial revenue outside AI data centers and predicted that more than 200 neocloud companies would face widespread failures and consolidation.
